The human printer is a group of people that replicate CMYK, black and white and spot colour prints through arduous use of felt tips.
By drawing many dots in a half tone pattern, they build up pictures not unlike those you’d find in print, but with a slight merging and softening of details. Of course, unlike with an electric printer, each print is different.
There’s probably a lot to be said about how it’s a reflection on the artistic desire to rebel against or subvert technologies that threaten the artist (such as impressionism in the wake of the invention/discovery of photography), but that could get a bit pretentious.
So instead I thought I’d introduce you to Louise Naunton Morgan, who I discovered today through It’s Nice That’s graduate series. She’s one of the printers, but I found the rest of her work really interesting. Here are some of my particular favourites:

Thinglink calls itself a “conversational product catalog”, but it’s basically a social network based around products.
It’s currently in private beta, but allows its members to upload images of design pieces in the hope of creating a sort of user generated product catalogue. Users can then comment on designs, “like” them (imagine that!) and add chosen designers and brands to their favourites.
I guess the aim is to eventually develop a network where design fans (for want of a better phrase) can interact with designers and brands, creating a product catalogue that maintains itself. Forming a catalogue in this way ensures that it stays at the leading edge of design.
This is where things get really interesting; Thinglink isn’t just a design social network. Its catalogue represents the coming together of a wiki (with input from both the general public and creators in the industry) and the social aspects of the networks we’re now so familiar with.
It also represents the opening up of a sector that can be quite exclusive. Just as soon as it gets out of private beta (I’ve got a couple of invites going if you’re interested; just comment!).

Groups of people do some amazing things, often bizarre and unexpected. When taking a brand or an idea into a community, you can try and anticipate what will happen but ultimately, as you’re dealing with people, you never know precicely what’ll ensue.
We usually focus on the brand as a catalyst for change in a community, but sometimes they take it on themselves to do something spectacular.
The something awful forums banded together (for some unknown reason) to create the worlds biggest online tower. ‘The goon tower‘. Each of the 400+ stories created by a forum member. The result is a hilarious journey through pop culture, replete with film and cultural references and a dark insight into the murderous minds of many of the creators
