Jennifer Aniston 'sex tape' and the nature of a meme
Creative Marketing by Andy Hyland
For those of you who may not have seen, this is Jennifer Aniston’s ‘sex tape’. It has puppies, a double rainbow, internet sensation Keenan Cahill and… is sponsored by Smartwater.
It’s part of a new generation of memes based on one simple question – ‘how can we make this go viral?’ It’s a question being asked up and down the country, by agencies and brands alike, and it’s a question that I think is ruining the nature of the very thing they’re talking about!
For me, a good meme has to be something I wouldn’t see on the TV or at the cinema; it’s funny, user generated content that my mate sends me in an email.
Brand generated memes are often too well made, too forced or just lacking the natural flare of a user generated meme. As soon as you create content that’s expertly crafted and well scripted it loses that genuine feel that so many original memes have - that quality that videos like ‘Charlie bit me’ have in abundance.
That said, it’s done very well with 6,000,000 views since the 7th of March, acquiring 400,000 in its first day!
