Social Media Sweethearts
With so much negativity surrounding social media at the moment, the riots and news yesterday of the awful internet ‘troll’, we thought it would be nice to pull up some good things that have been achieved through social media. Below are some of our favourites…
Alice Pyne is 15 years old and has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, she wrote a bucket list blog which got picked up by many social media users. One of her wishes was to trend on Twitter and within a couple of days her wish came true, bringing her to the attention of a global audience and allowing her to achieve lots of her other wishes.
With the horrors of the riots going on, peoples’ lives being torn apart and social media widely held to be at blame. @riotcleanup popped up on Twitter. Everyone affected by the riots organised their communities to support the victims, clear up and show that we couldn’t be taken down by a senseless group of idiots.

Two of many initiatives brought in after the riots by communities to help their local shops get back on their feet.
Twestival (or Twitter Festival) is the largest global grassroots social media fundraising initiative to date. Since 2009, volunteers have raised $1.75 million for over 275 nonprofits. All local events are organized 100% by volunteers and 100% of all ticket sales and donations go direct to projects.
Yesterday people took to Twitter to voice objections about two t-shirts from Topman with very offensive slogans aimed at women, one of which featured the slogan ‘nice new girlfriend, what breed is she?’. Topman have now taken them off their website, and out of their stores.
What good things have you seen achieved via social networks?
